Actually, I just added my test and it passes perfectly fine. I only tested on master (5.0), but this code has not really changed between 4.3 and 5.

Take a look at my org.hibernate.jpa.test.callbacks.xml.EntityListenerViaXmlTest test and see how that differs from your set up. At the moment I am thinking to just reject this unless I hear back.
