I thought I have to register the function for Hibernate's proprietary solution, JPA 2.1 does not mention any need for function registration in it's specification at all. Sure it does not say "no registration must be required" either, but considering this a compliant solution is a big stretch. But the explanation with registration at least explains something, thank you.
