I still like the basic idea I outlined in this comment, but I don't see we have any room for changing the serialization approach atm anyways.

IMO this issue should be closed w/o a fix for version. BTW, would this whole discussion not have been better off on the mailing list? Until there are actual actions to be taken, Jira issues don't seem to work that well (thinking about the changelog for example).
