i'm facing to the same problem, after updating from 3.6.10.Final to 4.3.6.Final. From the bugfix:
HHH-5732
(https://hibernate.atlassian.net/i#browse/HHH-5732) polymorphic associations of OneToMany as list or map are not possible, only as bag or set. The OneToManyPersister tries to update the table of the abstract class and the metioned Error occurs. The JUnitTests of the packages org.hibernate.test.unionsubclass, org.hibernate.test.unionsubclass.alias and org.hibernate.test.unionsubclass2 contains polymorphic oneToMany association mapped only as bag.
