As an interested party, I'm logging this bug with Hibernate. The bug was identified on StackOverflow:

It appears that Hibernate cannot work with Terracotta at the moment. This is preventing us from using Hibernate+Terracotta as a solution (due to a Hibernate bug, not a Terracotta bug).
