I agree with you about converting it to the new SPI for the short term at least. Even from TC perspective, from what I understand, they do not want to support Ehcache 2.

I'll do the conversion and deprecate the module, citing Ehcache being no longer supported and that users should use hibernate-jcache + ehache:3.0 instead, or (iiuc) a custom provider that TC/Ehcache will ship.
