Please note that the example works with hibernate version 4.1.8.Final and previous ones. Also this works in Hibernate 4.1.9.Final once the referencedColumnName is removed from JoinColumn. Although in the example I'm using Spring & Spring Data JPA, the problem described is rooted in the hibernate behavior.
