I created 3 PRs with different possible solutions to this -

• https://github.com/hibernate/hibernate-orm/pull/5992 Continues to use CDI but better handles the BeanManager not being ready for use
• https://github.com/hibernate/hibernate-orm/pull/5994 Opts out of using CDI if the extended or delayed strategies are used
• https://github.com/hibernate/hibernate-orm/pull/5995 Never uses CDI for UserTypes

I did the 3rd to account for no one else on the team thinking it is reasonable to host these in CDI. Personally I don’t see that, but consensus… If we do keep that approach then I think we should drop support for hosting all other contracts in CDI (aside from listeners and converters which JPA requires).
