I still get the NPE with Hibernate 5. I updated the test case to work with Hibernate 5 (see hibernate5-self-join.zip). You can run it with mvn test to see the result. For better naming I renamed the unit tests, they are now called ChildTest and ChildOTest. I also updated affected versions.
