I'd lean towards #2. Another Con for #3 is that ClassMate is a 0.x version, possibly irritating some users. There seems not really much activity around ClassMate either, so upgrading might be not such an issue.
Another option would doing #1 based on the gentyref code, which seems smaller and more focused to the problem we have. Se we might end up with a very compact solution we own ourselves.
