In our case, we don't transform entity into fields, hence there is no proper info on the properties.
We manually push stuff into document. And there I cannot see how you could get the number back w/o this patch.
As the code clearly falls-back to field.toString(), even for NumericFields.

But as I said before, we actually don't use NumericField, due to sorting issues.
But we mask the numbers in some sortable string.
