The hardest part to to report is the retrieval of the object before the update of the field in question. Assuming that it shouldn't matter how the object is retrieved, here are the retraced step (stripped our own stuff);

        Customer customer = ...
        customer.setEmail( "test@acme.com" );
        UnitOfWork unitOfWork = unitOfWorkFactory.currentUnitOfWork();
        EntityManager entityManager = unitOfWork.entityManager();
        entityManager.persist(entity);
        entityManager.flush();
        entityManager.refresh(entity);
        // The commit doesn't follow the flush and refresh in code. They were needed for some independent reason
        // The commit is part of a UnitOfWork.complete() method, and could be arbitrarily much later than this testcase.
        entityManager.getTransaction().commit();
