Can you upgrade to 5.3.4.Final? I can reproduce your issue with 5.2.4.Final but it works OK with 5.3.4.Final.

(it should be a drop in replacement API wise except that you might have to add the javax.el dependency if you haven't already added it)

If you can confirm it, I'll close the issue as out of date.
