Unless I'm missing something, I don't believe there's a non-hacky way to say "use 'blob($l)' if length is provided, otherwise 'blob'". Multiple dialects use blob($l)/clob($l) w/ the 255 default. For consistency, I'd vote to leave it and use the length attribute in @Lob if more capacity is needed.
