To get started with this specific issue, I'd suggest as first thing to adapt your existing test so that it can be included in the project in the /elasticsearch Maven module.

The project is built by maven, and will start an Elasticsearch node automatically when running tests from the elasticsearch module. Have a look at other tests in /elasticsearch/src/test/java for examples.
