I cannot reproduce what you experience (on 4.2.2 or master). I have created an explicit test as I did not find any - even though we do test that indirectly in other areas. The commit is https://github.com/hibernate/hibernate-orm/commit/97304a291defe24977ae9b962b185d8958727531
Can you create a pull request with a minimal reproducible test. Ideally simply adding what's needed on my commit.
In an "assigned" approach, the IdentifierValue is set to UNDEFINED which properly returns null in isUnsaved().
