Note that the plural are nice in the tag cloud but awkward in the blog entry itself.

Not so sure about this. I find it not so awkward to tag a blog with for example 'releases'. In the end though, the most prominent appearance of the tags is in the tags cloud and there the plural 's' makes more sense.
