Hi. I'm the (somewhat embarrassed) author of c3p0. The current development series – which was almost a release, but this is a showstopper – will be the last version built against JDK1.4/1.5/JDBC3; full JDBC4 support will come soon thereafter. Nevertheless, if possible, I'd like for the very-near-release version to support Hibernate 4.1. I've implemented an inelegant but I hope functional fix, but I could use help testing it against Hibernate 4.1. If anyone is willing, please contact me, swaldman at mchange.com. Thanks, and apologies.
