c3p0 should be upgraded to 0.9.2 or higher to fix the issue mentioned by Steve Waldman in his comment (https://hibernate.atlassian.net/browse/HHH-7778?focusedCommentId=49040&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-49040). I was able to upgrade our project to Hibernate 4.1.7.Final but nothing higher due to this issue.
