About rsync, I don't think that's a problem, we are talking about less than 150 MB copied locally. Or are you guys building it on a different machine?
About Gzip vs minify vs minify and gzip, there seem to be different reports

For sure gzip is better than nothing and is likely better than minify. gzip + minify is best though. I guess we can start with just gzip and monitor the bandwidth. But we must have gzip enabled in this case. The bandwidth cost of the feed in particular would kill us.
