As pointed out by Guillaume Smet on the mailing list, we have reasons to prefer storing zoned/offset date/times as dates in ES, which only leaves us one solution for retrieving the zone/offset value: the "_source" attribute.
Thus, if we choose one day to use the "fields" attribute, it won't be possible to use it for every field type. We might as well not do it at all.
