It seems to be supported by the query builder in Lucene 8 (see org.apache.lucene.queryparser.classic.QueryParserBase#analyzeWildcard), and Elasticsearch also no longer mentions that terms are "not analyzed" in ES 6.8+.

We may need to document that ES 6.7 and below does not normalize wildcard/prefix queries.
