Upgrading to Gradle 4.8 seems like a necessary step to keep making progress on testing newer JDK versions.

I tried the upgrade from 4.8 to 4.7 but I got some errors I couldn't resolve so I had to put this aside; I won't be able to work on this for a week at least. If someone else beats me to it that would be great.
