To be honest: no. While a certain dislike for Maven is understandable. It's still the most widely used build system. If you insist on someone using one madness over the other, it's probably hard to get any executable stuff at all. Spring is basically setting hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto to update, so nothing fancy here.
