~~HHH-8732~~ 's pull request (https://github.com/hibernate/hibernate-orm/pull/643), 2.7.x is not backwards compatible, so we can't simply upgrade to that in ORM 4. I have to leave it up to Alex Snaps whether or not they want to release another 2.4.x (or 2.6.x – iirc, that was the last version that would be compatible).
