Timothy, first off, thanks for the very clear error report and the test case, this really helps a lot in investigating such issues
I had a short look into your test, and I'm assuming that this is related to/a duplicate of
HV-618. This one was fixed in HV 5.0.0.Beta1. AFAIK Spring currently only integrates with the method validation feature of HV 4.x, so you can't easily upgrade right now, though. So I think you either could try to implement your own method interceptor integrating with the standardized method validation API from Bean Validation 1.1/Hibernate Validator 5.x (we've recently released the first CR) or wait for Spring integrating with HV 5.x.
