I've just did a quick test trying to upgrade to 5.4.0 and now the Log4j JPA appender doesn't work anymore

Is there anything related to this kind of usage mentioned in the specs?

I'm thinking of opening a ticket for Log4j, but I'm trying to gather some arguments other than it just doesn't work in Hibernate 5.4, especially since it was working in older versions and probably in EclipseLink, which I think Log4j is using for their tests.
