+1 we need to allow plugging a service which allows customizing how to interpret short names.

A Service as defined today needs to be one and only one, so the drawback would be that one can't really make this additive. Maybe a service isn't a good fit, but allowing to use the hard coded mapping and on top of that a Service would be a good starting point.
