I agree, I've been nagged with the puzzling lack of errors myself and these semantics are extremely unpractical.

Steve Ebersole could we re-open and re-evaluate our options please?

It's hard to believe that other JPA vendors would be fine with such a limitation either, it makes no sense and I hope we can find a way to do better.
