I'm worried about ImplicitJoinTest.testImplicitJoinFromExplicitCollectionJoin because we have a byte[] indeed in the person of fld_number but it's not used in any comparison.

So that means that just selecting a byte[] fails and that sounds like a more serious issue than the original one.
