BTW the ARM Spec might be interesting for this; its an old open standard for defining how to add breadcrumbs to messages/logs/events to help diagnose complex systems. I remember a while back some folks started implementing it at codehaus in the livetribe project but it didn't seem to go anywhere :( though at least it moved to github
