I tried to deploy the vaading demo application as a war and things went perfectly fine for me. I extensively reported what I did here: https://www.openshift.com/forums/openshift/cannot-publish-a-tomcat-app-to-openshift. Hope we can get the discussion rolling in the OpenShift forum.
