If you have a persitent setup, reloading of a session and firing of events shall resume execution of all process instances.
However we have discovered is that if the timer has expired during shutdown time, it will not be re-executed, see the Jboss restart test case in this thread: http://community.jboss.org/thread/166141 .
This 'feature' shall probably reported as JBPM5 bug.
