I'm seeing this with the latest AS trunk as well. The AS version is built with JDK 5,
but am running my test app with JDK 6 resulting in:

I was able to solve this problem. This is what environment I have:
winXP
JDK 1.6.0
JBoss 4.2.1
In the [jboss_home]/lib/endorsed add:
jaxb-api.jar
jboss-jaxrpc.jar
jboss-jaxws.jar
jboss-saaj.jar
copy them from [jboss_home]/server/default/lib
I've also added to endored jboss-logging-spi.jar
This I copied from jboss-5.0.0 client folder.

Thank you for working on this bug. I seem to be having this problem still, though. I
downloaded and installed AS 5.0.0.CR2-jdk6. I'm not sure which version of jbossws that
is (whatever the default is), but I'm getting the very same exception:
"setProperty must be overridden by all subclasses of SOAPMessage". I just have a
single @WebService class with one @WebMethod method. This is a simple Hello World!
Here's my env:
Ubuntu 8.04 x86
JBoss AS 5.0.0.CR2-jdk6 (default)
JDK 1.6.0_07-b06 HotSpot Server
I tried moving jars around, but that didn't work. I could keep trying that, but
shouldn't it just work?
This is reproduce-able, so ask me for any details.

Nevermind. Incompatibility with Eclipse.
I had been running AS5 through eclipse, but the eclipse plugin calls org.jboss.Main
differently than /<JBOSS_HOME>/bin/run.sh. So it worked fine when from the command
line. So, I diffed the process arguments and found I needed to add the following to
eclipse -> JBoss launch configuration -> Arguments -> VM arguments:
-Djava.endorsed.dirs=/<JBOSS_HOME>/lib/endorsed
All is well! Thanks.

worked for me, except I copied only the following 3 jars from
[jboss_home]/server/default/lib (jaxb-api.jar was not available) to
[jboss_home]/lib/endorsed:

running linux x64, jboss 4.2.1SA, jdk 1.6.0_10.
In order to have ws (server) working, jboss-saaj.jar is not enought ; service deploy, but
any call fail on a org/jboss/logger NotFoundException ; (as already said )
jboss-logging-spi.jar must be copied to endorced dir too.
This create a new bug/problem : The logging system got broken, only exceptions or
system.out get throw.

Hi,
I got rid of the error message using jboss-4.2.3.GA instead of 4.2.2 but it is a pretty
simple one and does not try to do anything heavy, used primitive types as parameters void
return type. Client calls from Netbeans 6.5 is not working fails with same error message ,
client from command line is working. In order to make calls from Netbeans compatible, what
is needed to be done ?

When I deployed "seambay" example of jboss-seam-2.1.1, I got the error message
"setProperty must be overridden by all subclasses of SOAPMessage".
After reading this Jira issue, I followed the steps mentioned in "JBoss5.0.0GA
Installation_And_Getting_Started_Guide.pdf - section 5.4 Java6 Note"
and copy below jar files from the JBOSS_HOME/client directory to the

In the abstract class javax.xml.soap.SOAPMessage which is now shipped with the jdk, the
implementation of setProperty is as follows:
public void setProperty(String property, Object value)
throws SOAPException {
throw new UnsupportedOperationException("setProperty must be overridden
by all subclasses of SOAPMessage");
}
in the constructor of org.jboss.ws.soap.SOAPMessageImpl it calls the super methods
setProperty(CHARACTER_SET_ENCODING, "UTF-8");
setProperty(WRITE_XML_DECLARATION, false);
This results in the exception being thrown.

For JBoss 5.1 I needed to add the following jars from [jboss_home]/client (jaxb-api.jar
was not available) to [jboss_home]/lib/endorsed:
jbossws-native-jaxrpc.jar
jbossws-native-jaxws.jar
jbossws-native-jaxws-ext.jar
jbossws-native-saaj.jar

I didn't your below point
install updates default conf
so You need to manually transfer changes.
My application: SOAP web services and Restful web services.
I've upgraded JDK from java1.5 to Java1.6.
As you suggested I've upgraded jbossws2.0.3 andmoved few jars from client to
lib/endorsed
But I'm getting below error.

But this class with expected method is available in jaxb-impl.jar
When finding his jar in my jboss, I got the below path has the the jar.
client/jaxb-impl.jar
server/default/deploy/jbossws.sar/jaxb-impl.jar
server/default/deploy/jaxb-impl.jar
Please help on this.

As I do not want to use jboss classes, since there is always a conflict, I finally managed
to get my project working :
- no jboss-classloading, no jboss-web, no tweak in jboss/lib/endorsed directory, and no
EAR assembly
- running on a JDK 1.6 and JBoss 4.2.1.GA
My workaround was simply to add thoses maven dependencies :
