After some investigation I noticed that SignalLog extends CompositeLog in the java class and ProcessLog in the hibernate mapping files. i.e. in SignalLog.hbm.xml extends="org.jbpm.logging.log.ProcessLog" After editing the hibernate mapping file SignalLog.getChildren() returns the children.
