I don't use the functionality enough to know how well it scales, but I'm sure that
it works well enough for most small to medium scale instances. (We never had the need to
add indices). The amount of variables included in your query will be an important factor.

Currently, there's no way of searching for process instances that contain variables
set to a given value.
Sometimes, there's no way of assigning a process instance key when starting a
process, so we need to search for processes using values stored in some of the
variables...
