I think this happens when the timer is triggered while the server is already shutting down. This can happen from time to time, since the timer is invoked every 10 seconds and shutdown can take up to several seconds when running in cluster. I dont thin'k there is much to do to workaround this.
In real life the timer can be first undeployed before server shutdown – and this is actually what the README file says to do. So users should only hit this when they start to test and experiment with the deployment.
