Currently the code ignores the npe - but the problem is that we don't know whether it is a valid or invalid response. So I propose to assume it is valid, and therefore break out of the loop (clearing any exceptions associated with previous urls attempted), and then if it was invalid, it will result in a new situation being created anyway, which will set the state back to IN_PROGRESS.
