Those changes does not require you to update the PL version. However, is strongly recommended that you use the latest one.
As a side note, I have improved the JPA store to not require a specific entity for custom types. Usually a custom type means new properties and behaviors, so most use cases will provide a specific entity for custom types (like I did in the branch above). I have improved the JPA store to support cases like yours. That would be available in 2.5.0.Final.
For now you can follow the changes I did to the branch above.
