I would like to ask where I can find out what the road map for drools
development is?

There is no one single place really, JIRA has a lot of stuff, but also the blog.
I am especially interested in finding out when is drools *officially*
expected to be comatible with eclipse 3.3?

I wasn't planning to do one for drools 4.0.x as we can't do eclipse 3.2 and eclipse 3.3 from the same code base. However there seems to be uneending demand so we are going to do this for the next 4.0.3 release, down side is its duplicate effort for the dev team :( However trunk will remain eclipse 3.3+ and jdk1.5+.
Another question: is it possible to use eclipses update feature to work on
the latest (trunk) version of the plugin?

Not yet no, we are looking into it - no idea when it will be done.
With best regards
Agata

hot fixes go to the 4.0.x branch, right?
New features (including drools-solver) go into trunk, right?

4.0.x is the long lived stable branch, no new features. We will mirror
4.0.x fixes with the 4.1.x branch. 4.1.x is the same as 4.0.x but is
compiled for jdk1.5+ and Eclipse 3.3

4.1.0 for jdk1.5 and Eclipse3.3 is looking ok, so I've branched it:
http://anonsvn.labs.jboss.com/labs/jbossrules/branches/4.1.x

At some point we'll put the binaries out for this as an unnofficial
release, for those that need Eclipse 3.3 - probably end of this week.

I've just updated the build system to use Eclipse 3.3, this means
on the first time you use it there will be a delay while it
downloads the new Eclipse and GEF artifacts to the
"local-eclipse-drop-mirror" folder. Kris has updated the eclipse
project so it should work.

Hudson is doing its first build of this (will finish in about an
hour from now, due to download), #879, if that finishes
successfully you should be able to download the eclipse 3.3 plugin
and play with it - and hopefully find any regressions :)
https://hudson.jboss.org/hudson/job/drools/ - build information
http://dev45.qa.atl.jboss.com:8585/hudson/job/drools/ws/trunk/target/
- workspace for downloads

sorry thats the internal url, you want:
https://hudson.jboss.org/hudson/job/drools/lastSuccessfulBuild/artifact/trunk/target/

Have fun
