Yes in theory other compilers could be used, we just haven't done the work to make those available out of the box and there hasn't been any demand.

I had a look at the JavaDialectConfiguration and it doesn't allow anything other than:

- org.eclipse.jdt.internal.compiler.Compiler
- org.codehaus.janino.Parser
