I'm not sure if its possible to achieve it as you might get e.g. missing method/missing class exception if you start mixing different versions of hibernate artifacts.
I'm afraid that the only safe solution would be running your workflow process in its own JVM. You might want to have a look on drools-server and check if it does what you want. I know it can run rules and return results back to the calling application but i'm not sure about workflows.
