Hi all,
I have been working with Drools 5.2.0 on windows xp and I have a stable
project.
I upgraded to windows 8, drools 5.5.0 and upgraded to eclipse Juno (from
Helios).
I have now encountered a strange problem with my existing drools project. I
have a accustom operator called supersetof which now results in the
following error reported in the IDE in any file where the supersetOf is used
(LHS):
Error: java.lang.NullPointerException
After receving this error the drools parser does not work, hence this is the
only error I have.
I have tried to use the Drools 5.2.0 again (on the new windows 8 machine)
but I get the same problem so I guess it has to do with some IDE\eclispe
configuration or compatibility issue.
Obviously not the drools project code as I have not made any changes to the
working project.
I did make sure the custom operator is configured similar to the way it was
on my previous computer.
Any ideas? Is there a different configuration for Juno?

the error I describes in a compilation error in the IDE and not in runtime so
there is no stack trace other than the Error: java.lang.NullPointerException
error indicated in the eclipse markers tab.
If testing this in runtime can spread light on the matter i will do so (it
will take some time to get it set)

it compiles in 5.[34].0
The rule uses the custom operator supersetOf, both operands are
java.util.Collection.

it works for me

There are Any differences between a 5.2 5.6 and 6.0.x.
Your example works great for 6.0.x btw.

Hi Davide,
The problem occurs here at my evaluator!
Please note lines 1 and 2 and the third parameter to the evaluate function!
It has changed from *'Object' *to *'FactHandle' *from 5.4.0 to 5.6.0.
The first step return back the same factHandle object so the Casting fails
on step 2). Please note that this works just fine in 5.4.0.
The error is:
Any help on this issue is greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately I am not completely surprised... ironically, that function
signature was changed at some point to simplify the code and make it more
robust internally.
The change, however, broke the backwards compatibility with existing custom
implementations (something the users can fix) and the way the evaluators are
invoked by MVEL in the constraints.
The latter required to create an EvaluatorWrapper class which is responsible
for matching the Objects to their handles and extractors.
From what you say, there seems to be a problem in the latter:
"the first step return back the same factHandle object"
Could you make sure that the factHandle is holding the correct object and
that the extractor is a ClassFieldExtractor trying to read the appropriate
field?
A self-contained reproducer would also be appreciated. Some bugs related to
the custom evaluators were fixed last week in 6.1 master,
it would be important to know if this bug is still there, and whether the
fixes should be backported and how
