When the JBoss Application Server (JBoss AS) project was launched in 1999, no one could have guessed how successful it would become. Today, you will not only find a successful project (JBoss AS), but also a large and vibrant community (the JBoss Community) and a successful product (JBoss Enterprise Application Platform).

Beyond Just a Java App Server. JBoss has expanded its capabilities and is no longer just a Java EE Application Server. JBoss is now an umbrella term for nearly 100 projects, all part of the JBoss Community. You will find projects focused on integration, business rules, processes, NoSQL, cloud, mobile, polyglot, messaging, tooling, alternative development frameworks and more. All of these fall outside the charter of the original Java EE application server and yet are related to making developing applications easier.

The Product. JBoss AS has matured beyond its original form to the product now known as JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (JBoss EAP). Many of the world’s largest enterprises depend on JBoss EAP as their top-tier solution for some of the most demanding workloads on the planet: NYSE Euronext, Sprint Communications and Allianz, to name a few.

Why Re-name.

With our ambitious roadmap ahead of us we realized that, like the technology industry overall, we are at an inflection point where embracing emergent technologies into our flagship product makes sense for our developers and customers.

A new name for the JBoss AS project will improve the differentiation between project and product. It also acknowledges that Java is but one of the many functions the project now serves. A new name will make it easier for each user segment to clearly identify the offering that best meets their respective needs.

Knowing how important this is to our community, we want you to participate in this new mission by participating in an election to rename the core JBoss Application Server project. Members of the JBoss developer communities and Red Hat associates are invited to nominate names online between October 1 - 14, 2012.

The top nominated names, as decided by a panel of judges made up of Red Hat employees, will be presented for voting October 21 - November 1. The winning name will be announced November 15th during the Devoxx conference in Antwerp, Belgium.

For more information about the election, or to nominate a name for the final ballot, please visit here.

We hope you’re as excited as we are about our direction moving forward. To our community and customers - thank you for being on the journey with us!
