When I closed the project, the data source was removed and the VDB (which remained behind) was marked inactive. When I tried to query the VDB I had no idea what was going on as it had been fine earlier. A VDB, and its data sources, once deployed must remain deployed until the user takes action to un-deploy it or its sources.
