the connector class. While you don't need to write a method that contains the
function’s logic, you still need to extend the connector class by adding the according
function(s) as supported pushdown function(s). You then need to package your extended
connector and deploy it to the server. In other words, you have to deal with Java code and
packaging jar files, and getting these jar files deployed to the server, if all you want
to do is to use a particular pushdown function in your virtual database designs.

With Bernd's clarification there is still room for improvement from a design time
perspective. Something we've talked about before is that functions have been
arbitrarily separated from the relational metamodel. If functions were part of model tied
to the source, there's no reason why the runtime couldn't treat them as pushdown
functions. If we still maintain the separation between the metamodels (since I'm
assuming that merging them would be too much work) you could just add model to source
assignment logic for function models in the same way that is done for physical models. It
wouldn't even be necessary to distinguish between physical/virtual function models,
since the function metadata itself declares whether it's for pushdown or not. You
would just want to make the source assignment of a function model optional.

I like this proposal. We are doing already doing the function model load at runtime, we
can also push these functions as pushdown functions if we can identify for which
translator they belong. The only issue is that we cache the capabilities and we need work
around that.

We do have more flexibility in Designer via extended model properties to inject more
metadata into any model. In addition, the function model functionality was improved in 7.4
to auto-detect dependency in transformations for function models resulting in model import
entries.
So I'm assuming that pushdown function calls would still be defined in the SQL so
details or proposals on where and how these function methods are defined/cached/discovered
would be beneficial

there are two straight-forward paths toward making source specific pushdown functions
definable in designer
1. merge the function and relational metamodels (functions could then be indexed as
prodedures with the isfunction flag set)
2. allow function models to be assigned to sources just like physical models
Either could then be interpreted by the runtime as the definition of pushdown functions
with only minor changes.
The only usecase that is complex with this approach is having the same function in
multiple sources being treated semantically the same (like a global udf). This is already
a somewhat complicated issue currently, which I can expand on separately. This however
could be handled most easily by allowing a function or function model to be assigned to
more than 1 source.

That seems more natural with the design model we have. Do we have such flag already by any
luck? or can we use the new extended metadata property here? Also will cut down on current
complexity with "pushdowns", then UDF will be truly UDF that are backed by Java

I should add that while straight-forward, there is considerable work to 1. To preserve
the current indexing format function specific metadata, such as pushdown, java class, etc.
would have to become extension properties. For backwards compatibility we would probably
still have to have the function metamodel as well.
So I would like 1 for the long term direction as well, but if we want to do something in
the near term it would probably be option 2.

With the restriction of pushdown only, that could work. There would need to be Designer
validation on a procedure marked as function=true, such as ensuring that it has a return
parameter and only has input parameters. Otherwise the indexing would then be exactly the
same. We would just need to make a few changes on the Teiid side to have the procedures
loaded as schema scoped functions, then everything would work as expected.
The only remaining issue then would be semantic equivalence, but we could punt on that
initially.

After thinking about this some more there is additional work beyond just adding
validation. The designer FunctionLibrary logic would have to be expanded to handle
physical procedures marked as functions. Additionally the function metadata category and
non-deterministic are missing (but could be handled as extension properties).

This sounds all doable. This could result in deprecating our Function metamodel and
ultimately retiring it.
We'll be rearchitecting the model extension framework in 7.5 so we'd maybe just

No, you still have function model, but only for "true" UDF. we always
inter-mixed UDF with pusdowns. This feature will separate them to their own semantics,
such that when someone says UDF it truly means UDF backed by Java code. Pushdown is just
another function/procedure with special validation in the source model.
In 7.5 if you want get rid of the function model, then you need to introduce
"function" to relational metamodel, so that one can define a function in the
view layer with similar semantics current function model. This assuming we are ok with
changing the format of index files.

A function that is evaluated by the source RDBMS directly is called a source or pushdown
function. It is called pushdown, because when Teiid determines that function is supported
by the source system, instead of evaluating in its engine, it pushes the function down to

The terms here are a bit over-loadded.
A UDF is any function that is not a Teiid system function.
The term pushdown by itself means that we will evaluate at the source, just as Ramesh
says. However in the context of UDFs it's important to not the difference between the
pushdown modes - optional, never, always.
We have to be careful not to conflate a "never pushdown UDF" with simply UDF. A
UDF can have other modes.
We have commonly used the term "pushdown function" as a short-cut to mean an
"always pushdown UDF". The only reason we should be careful is that "all
pushdown functions" include Teiid system functions - which have a much different
API/user level handling.

Currently, in order to use a database function, even if pushdown is required, it is still
necessary to add the function interface to a Java class within the connector, and the
connector then must be deployed to the server in order to allow for this pushdown function
to be used within the Designer. This creates a lot of extra effort every time you want to
make use of a new database function. Particularly, given the schema designer doesn't
necessarily have access to either the connector code or the server, and then must involve
other parties simply to be able to use an additional database function. It would be very
beneficial to speedy schema development if that was not necessary, and if, say, the
interface could be defined on the Designer side, added to the VDB, and then deployed as
part of the VDB.
