I agree, the amount of effort required getting automation working *correctly* is going to exceed the amount of work it would save.
not really agreeing on this one, as long as maven release plugin works (and it does) this is matter of invoking 3 maven operations. which can be done by anyone with necessary permissions.
If release for whatever reason cannot be done that simple, that is another problem that needs to be addressed.
