If you take a closer look on the AeroGear.js documentation, you'll see that we use jQuery.ajax under the covers, so it's kinda like comparing apples to oranges 

jQuery.ajax is a raw API - AeroGear.js gives you a nice abstraction layer to deal with REST endpoints.
