According to the presentation of Nigel Deakin at Devoxx (What's (probably) coming in Java Message Service 2.0 of http://java.net/downloads/jms-spec/JMS2.0Devoxx2011.pdf), JMS 2.0 might have the same mecanism of defining factories (@JMSConnectionFactoryDefinition) and destinations (@JMSDestinationDefinition). If it's the case, I would expect Alternatives to work the same way as they (hopefully) will in CDI 1.1
