The "Compact Node Definition" format is described in the JSR-283 draft specification (http://jcp.org/aboutJava/communityprocess/pr/jsr283/), and is also supported in Jackrabbit (the JCR reference implementation) as documented at http://jackrabbit.apache.org/node-type-notation.html.  Note that this last link includes a grammar.
